Max Steinmann   (1918 – 1994)

Max Steinmann, father of artists Heinz and Evelyn Steinmann was born in Winterthur, Switzerland, and studied at the Ecole Nationale d’Art Decoratif de Nice, (Beaux – Arts) in France for five years.  He painted in Switzerland and Southern France from 1935, however not full-time.  In 1958 he immigrated to Australia with his family and after four years painted full-time producing over 1500 oil paintings between 1961 and 1994.  Based in Bathurst, NSW, he travelled regularly throughout rural NSW and southern Queensland depicting many historic homesteads, landscapes and genre scenes.  He was also an exceptional portrait painter.  In a few hours, without pre-drawing he could capture in oils a person’s character at one sitting.

He won a number of art prizes and his work was included in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize.  Though he held few exhibitions his talent did not go unnoticed; when in Sydney leading art critic James Gleeson wrote: “Max Steinmann’s paintings are of a kind we should see more of and that more artists should attempt.”
